About This Product

Duckweed (Lemna minor) is sold in 2 lbs portion and now a 4 oz portion. Very small bright green leaves. Rampant grower. Excellent fish food. Duckweed is a very small light green free-floating, seed bearing plant. Duckweed has 1 to 3 leaves, or fronds, of 1/16 to 1/8 inch in length. A single root (or root-hair) protrudes from each frond. Duckweeds tend to grow in dense colonies in quiet water, undisturbed by wave action. Often more than one species of duckweed will be associated together in these colonies. Duckweeds can be aggressive invaders of ponds and are often found mixed in with mosquito fern or watermeal. If colonies cover the surface of the water, then oxygen depletion and fish kills can occur. These plants should be controlled before they cover the entire surface of the pond.
Duckweed colonies provide Habitat for micro invertebrates but if duckweed completely covers the surface of a pond for an extended period it will cause oxygen depletion. These colonies will also eliminate submerged plants by blocking sunlight penetration. Many kinds of ducks consume duckweed and often transport it to other bodies of water.

    AWESOME

I bought this for my planted 125 gal tank with goldfish to discourage them from nipping at my other plants. 4oz is actually a lot once placed in the tank! (It pretty much covered the entire surface of my tank which is 72ヤx15ヤ) Dump it in a fine strainer and rinse the dirt off before putting it in your tank. Mine did not smell as previous reviews have mentioned and was truly as advertised with the leaves being extremely tiny. Even my smaller goldfish were able to eat this. I woke up the next morning and ALL of it was gone, my fish LOVE this stuff. Guess I need to buy the larger portion!

    Great buy but...

Edit: Turns out I got Spirodela polyrhiza(Giant Duckweed) with a little Lemna minor Duckweed. No complaints though! The duck weed came in great condition. They were a little bigger and sturdier than I thought they were going to be. They survived the hot summer shipping... but the pest snails(mini ramshorns) did not. They were cooked and it smelled TERRIBLE. Like tonsil stones but x100 stronger; you could probably use them as smelling salts. If this happens to you, I would highly recommend using gloves to rinse them unlike I did. Or use overnight shipping. Or not order in the summer... blegh!
